Why “Functional Safety”? For best possible protection of persons, environment and equipment, manufacturers and users of field devices are confronted with increasing safety requirements. The safety requirements for the assessment of "Functional Safety" are specified in IEC/DIN EN 61508 and IEC/DIN EN 61511. These European and international standards are the basis for a systematic exposure evaluation of process measurement and control systems.

Industrial processes present risks and have potential to cause incidents with serious consequences for people or the environment. Process manufacturers must anticipate potential incidents and set risk control measures in place. Any process management system, from basic process control to safety instrumented systems, only works reliably with reliable instrumentation.
