Content: | Following the 2015 Paris Agreement, with over 180 countries accepting to take initiative to reduce the carbon footprint, the world focus is shifting towards clean energy resources. The renewable energy sources (RES) are thus expected to grow continuously in the smart grid framework. Besides, widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) would significantly help to achieve the clean energy objective. This seminar will present the challenges and opportunities in these two overlapping areas. In the first part of the seminar, grid integration challenges for the renewable energy resources will be discussed, which will cover the energy management issue, utilization of energy storage device, microgrid. The second part of the seminar will focus on the challenges for large scale EV grid integration, which would require comprehensive planning of the charging infrastructure, to mitigate any demand–supply mismatch. Charging demand of the EVs is also influenced by several factors, such as driver behavior, location of charging stations, electricity pricing, etc., which will be presented alongside case-studies.
Speaker’s bios: Dr. Ukil is currently Senior Lecturer in the Dept of Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering, University of Auckland, New Zealand. From 2013–2017, he was Assistant Professor in the School of EEE, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he led a group of 13 researchers, and 7 PhD students, attracting 5 Million SGD funding from Energy Market Authority (EMA), Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore. From 2006–2013, he was Principal Scientist at Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) Corporate Research, Baden, Switzerland, leading projects on smart grid. He received his BEng (1st Class Hon.) degree in EE from Jadavpur Univ, Kolkata, India, MS degree from Univ of Bolton, UK and PhD degree from Pretoria (Tshwane) Univ of Technology, South Africa, working on power systems disturbance analysis with national utility ESKOM. His expertise and research interests include renewable energy, energy management storage, EV grid integration, smart grid, power systems/electronics. He is inventor of 10 patents, and author of more than 160 refereed papers, 1 book (Springer, Germany), 2 book chapters. He is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, USA, and Registered Chartered Engineer (CEng), UK. |
